This dissertation examines the extreme urban condition of Detroit, a city whose population exploded 7-fold in the first half of the 20th century only to halve again by the year 2000.
This extraordinary fall from grace is examined in terms of the city's urbanism in order to understand the extreme symptoms of depopulation that are now witnessed. The role that architecture has played in various regeneration attempts over the past thirty years is explored, along with the prevailing political and economic contexts.
